April Newsletter 2019

Dear Friends and Sponsors,

AS SPRING GETS UNDERWAY, we wish to thank all of you for your continued support of Mission Teaching Foundation.  Your generosity and commitment make it possible for us to continue supporting the students of Yashalum!

CURRENTLY, there are 121 students in the Yashalum Program:  42 high school girls, 39 high school boys and 40 university students (25 young men and 15 young women).  As  you know from the Christmas letters that many of you receive, the students are especially grateful for the support you’ve given them over the years.  One way they show their gratitude is by giving back to the Program, for their Mayan heritage teaches them that blessings must be paid back in service to their community.  Here is some of the service work in which students are currently involved:

THE GIRLS AT CASA SANTA MARIA have been busy cleaning and repairing the sports field which had fallen into disrepair.  Their hope is to form basketball and soccer teams for the girls.  They’ve also been busy cultivating the tomato crop that was planted in February.   They continue to produce lovely artisan handicrafts for sale at the local market and to sell food to hospital visitors through the small market they’ve created at Casa Santa Maria.

THE BOYS AT RANCHO SANTIAGO APOSTOL and the UNIVERSITY STUDENTS have been doing an extensive spring cleaning and have given a new coat of paint to all of the buildings on the Ranch.  They’ve also been preparing the coffee fields for the spring by planting 3000 new seedlings and currently they are raising the new crop of piglets!

FATHER lOREN’S death last summer was an unexpected shock to all of us, and we miss him terribly.  But we are committed to continuing the work he began so many years ago to support the intelligent and enterprising indigenous youth of Chiapas.  We couldn’t do it without you, and we are blessed to have your continued support.  On behalf of the young people of Yajalon, THANK YOU!!

In Gratitude,

THE STAFF AT MISSION TEACHING FOUNDATION
