Christmas 2021

Dear Friends and Sponsors, star

As 2021 draws to a close, we hope this letter finds all of you in good health.  While life isn’t quite “back to normal,” 2021 has been an improvement for the students of Yashalum who have returned to their classrooms.  The high school students have returned to Casa Santa Maria and Rancho Santiago Apostol in order to attend classes in Yajalon, and the university students have returned to in-person classes in the eleven different cities where they attend school.
We are excited to share some good news!  One of our long-time sponsors, Mr. Larry McDermott, has started a scholarship for our students.  The scholarship, which is a memorial in remembrance of his sister, is called the Susan V. Cooper Memorial Annual Scholarship.  The scholarship will subsidize the tuition of a new university student for 4 years.  When the student graduates, a new student will be selected.
The 2021-22 school year continues through June.  This year, your donations are supporting 60 students: 26 university students and 34 high school students.  We are proud to report that in June 2021:

  • 7 students graduated from the university
  • 6 high school students graduated and are now attending university

We’d like to include a letter that we received from one of the university graduates. His words are a powerful reminder of the importance of your support for our students.

Dear MTF,
I am writing you this little letter to tell you a bit about my life.  In June, I completed my degree in Zootechnical Veterinary Medicine at the Juarez Autonomous University of Tabasco. I got an 8.2 (out of 10) GPA. I am very happy to have finished another stage of my study, and I am excited about pursuing my career.

My community continues to be challenged by climate change which has had a negative impact on our ability to farm.  We have also gone through difficult times due to the pandemic, and we continue to take precautions to protect our health.

My family and I are very grateful to you for the support you gave us during my studies. Our faith gives us strength, and we pray that God will multiply His blessings on you and your families.
I say goodbye to you with much affection.

Your Godson,
Francisco Alvaro Arcos

We on staff at Mission Teaching Foundation, along with our Mayan brothers and sisters at Yashalum offer prayers for all of you.  With gratitude, we thank you for your support of the Mayan young people in their pursuit of better lives for themselves, their families and their communities.  May you have a blessed Christmas and a healthy New Year.
